Island Bound 2007-2008 - Blog 5

ISLAND BOUND 2007!!

We have left Moorehead City a few days ago heading further south trying to reach Daytona so we can cross over to the Bahamas approx. 73 miles across. It was hard leaving our good friends Owen, Richard, Robert and Marina. They were some sailors we traveled with for a week or two. Owen is from Australia and is the most knowledgeable sailors I ever met. We spent time on their boat laughing and talking of sailing stories were priceless. I miss him he taught me alot about sailing, weather, equiptment and much more. Owen gave us some fowl weather gear and Robert gave us a life raft to us in case of an emergency when we cross over to the islands. These people were some of the finest people I have met in a long time. We sailed through a Marine firing and training range the other day. We were escorted by some patrol boats about 6 miles to a safer part of the river. It was odd we droped achor and thought we were safe but we had helicopters flying all around us for hours. There were tracer bullets flying everywere throughout the night then these two gun ships came out with 50 caliber guns on each end with men manning these things it was scary but they were very nice to us and said we were safe where we where. The next morning we went to Wrightsville Beach and anchored and stayed the night. The next day we continued down to Hewlett Creek where the Dawsons Creek series was filmed. So we got some info and set out to try to find the houses and the creek where it was filmed. We had great sucsess in locating the houses and the creek. The people were so friendly about it I couln't believe how nice they could be. I took lots of photos of the houses and they are on the site here. The southern hospitality is remarkable to say the least these people of North Carolina are some of the finest people I have met. My hat goes off to them. The next day we left to go to this little marina in Southport were more filming of Dawsons Creek took place. We arived and anchored out then took the dingy to shore to try to go to Walmart to get some things. This women by the name of Robin picked us up took us to the store came back to get us and she was an artist so when we got back to the boat she gave us a gift which was two beautifull paintings she had done. I have know idea why she felt the need to do this but they where unbeleivable to say the least so we excepted them and will get them framed and matted when we return home. The people are just amazing in the south. I can not say enough about them really. The past couple of days have been worth the trip to me. I love meeting the kind of people we have met the past couple of days, they restore my faith in the human spirit and man kind in general. Well I hope you all have a Merry X-Mas and god bless from the Wanderer and your Skipper !!!!!

Island Bound 2007-2008 - New York City

ISLAND BOUND 2007-2008!!

The arrival in to New York City was quite monumental in a few ways. We have sailed now 1400 miles thru warm, wet, cold and wind of all degrees. The Hudson River was cold for us but we managed to complete this as we did the Erie Canal. We sailed by West Point the Military Academy. This was very interesting to see with its large brick buildings and enormous size. It was a city within a city almost. We encountered a few helicopters circling the institution I’m sure it was some security issue. We spent one night in the boat before going to Manhattan. I a slip would cost a great deal in New York City. We stayed across from Yonkers New York and watched the sky line from about 15 miles out of New York City itself. It was very pretty at night with the city lit up and all. The next day we motored down to The New York City Marina operated by the parks division. The cost was what I expected 75 dollars a night. That did not even include electric for the night. I paid for one night and the next two nights I placed the boat on a mooring hook in the bay which only cost me 30 dollars per night. This was a little better but still after having so many free stays on our trip due to the time of year. Most of the marina’s being closed this late in the season it was hard to pay this amount only to secure the boat with no amenities attached to it.
We are going to stay with some friends here in the city; Jessica, a girl who was a model in New York and did a lot of modeling in Thailand. She has started a company here in New York and is a true sweetheart to say the least. Her boyfriend Brian is a great guy and we have really enjoyed their company and expertise of the city. Brian is in law school and very committed by the amount of studying he does daily. Jessica has really helped us in our travels around the city and with some transportation issues which are so crucial here in the city. Brian and Jess live in Manhattan yes I said Manhattan. It’s a small apartment but very clean, quaint and located perfectly in Manhattan which is conducive to getting around the city.
Now let’s talk about my experience with the Big Apple, New York City. Words are hard to find to describe New York City. Overwhelming is one but not nearly enough to put a finger on it. I walked around the city Saturday morning alone to get a handle on it. You see Saturday morning is quiet at least moderately compared to the everyday work week busy. The thing with New York is its so hard to get somewhere in a hurry. It takes so long to get from one spot to another by bus or subway. Cabs are much quicker but of course they are expensive. I had a hard time with the homeless people I seen. It just was sad to see them in rags and curled up on the sidewalk trying to keep warm in the cold weather. I just wanted to know at what point they got to this juncture in their life. Where was their turning point from a normal life to this? I guess it comes from my small town way of seeing people and how small town people help one another. I couldn’t help myself it bothered me to see them the way they were. They would be sitting there eating some kind of food from a container and looking cold lost and so alone, they just seemed so alone in a city of 12 million. Every one in New York seems so alone. Many New Yorkers have dogs it is very common. I think they need them in some way to feel they are not alone, we were told that a lot of the homeless refuse help; they will not accept being taken to shelters. I guess from their way of looking at things I wouldn’t want help either. People in the city are so glazed over in their blank stares as they walk from place to place. They don’t look at you and if you ask them a question or say hi they look away wanting not to be approached. It’s so impersonal here you are in a field of people yet all are non responsive to a glance or smile. The massive amounts of different races and religions are colorful and so full of life yet everyone is afraid to say hello to one another. It’s a strange concept for me. The police officers are very friendly and helpful. They really are first class in the way they keep the city safe and under control. We had two officers help us on the right bus and even paid for it for us because I didn’t have the right card to pay. The cost of things in Manhattan is taking the average price of some thing and doubling it and you have Manhattan prices. Louis Vitton, Armani, Niemen Marcus, Macy’s, Lords an Taylor, and a hundred more designer clothing, shoes and such just lining the streets and billboards of 5th avenue and Times Square all very expensive but very elegant. Anything one would want is in New York. I’ve seen no name art that was 45 thousand dollars and suits that cost 5 thousand dollars. Shoes I never heard of for 800 dollars sometimes 2 thousand dollars, they all fill the many of stores and windows. As I walked into Macy’s it was uncomfortably to be wearing a 40 dollar pair of Levis jeans and a 20 dollar sweater, but I still had to at least set foot in this store of such distinction and class.
This city is truly beautiful and so untouchable in many ways. Everyone should see New York City some time in their life just to make you appreciate were it is you come from. The time I spent alone, to myself in New York was very much a deep felt experience. The coffee shops and their delicious rolls and muffins were a gourmets dream all the way. The City comes alive as the morning comes to an afternoon; with the wind rushing down the streets carrying with it the papers from yesterday and left over tickets to clubs and theaters. I found myself actually enjoying and feeling in some strange way comfortable in this large hectic mass of people and commerce. Times Square!! The lights and rush of Times Square is without a doubt some thing to behold. The massive TV screens on the sides of buildings line the street with ads and promotions of everything from television shows to products I never heard of. The Tonight show with David Lettermen and Oprah Whinfrey Show is in Times Square. This was interesting to at least be here in front of the studio. The shows weren’t taping due to the strike that was going on with the production crew and stage hands.
As I walked down 5th avenue starting my back to the apartment we were staying at, I was listening to my MP3 player. I looked up and seen the Radio City Music Hall down the street. Just then the next song started on my Ipod and would you believe it was old blue eyes himself, Frank Sinatra. A wave of goose bumps came over me as he started to sing I did it my way, it kind of made think about my trip with my sailboat thus far. I’m doing it my way now aren’t I?? Talk to you all soon SKIPPER OUT!!

Island Bound 2007-2008 - Blog 3

Island Bound 2007 !

Hello everyone ! Thanks for reading my blogs about the trip. Its been quite boring lately the past couple of days we have been held up here by Toledo with 30 mph winds. The sun has been out and it has been nice but just very windy. We attempted to go out Yesterday with small craft advisory’s but we turned around and headed back in to the marina it was just to windy we had 3-5 foot waves and they were breaking over the bow of the boat. So here we are cleaning the boat up doing laundry stocking up on supplies and just trying to keep busy. Last night was quite and experience we woke up to some noise of the bumper grinding on the dock. As we tried to rearrange the boat we realized that the water level according to the depth finder we dropped 1.5 feet the boat was on the bottom due to the winds pushing the water out of the marina, remember Lake Erie is shallow anyway. So in the morning all was back to normal the water had come back up and we were back to 5 feet of water the boat was moving freely again. That was a little nerve-racking.

The weather looks good for Sunday so we will run Sunday and sail 24 hours to make up the time. If we do this for two days we can be back on track. The weather is suppose to be ok the next 3-4 days. The winds will be only 10 mph to 12 mph. I have become use to traveling to new locations every other day so this stationary thing for more than two days is becoming annoying.

The trip has been so much fun so far Its hard to describe. I think you have to be somewhat of a loner slash adventurer to fully get the idea of traveling all the time and sacrificing that feel of security in your life. I love the idea of meeting new people each day and getting somewhere different every other day. The goal of course is to get to the Islands safe and the boat in one piece. So far that we have accomplished up to this point. Well keep posting comments on the site and keep reading there will be more to come with more personnel sides to me as the trip continues. I will try to get a video out here as soon as I get some more time to put it together. Live life like a pirate LIVE HARD LIVE STRONG ARRRRRRRRR!

Island Bound 2007 !
Well the parts came in and I proceeded to install the head gasket and the new thermostat with a new set of plug wires. The parts didn’t get in till 2:30 in the afternoon so by the time I got everything in it was to late in the day to get started. I did try to fire the engine up it sputtered but came to life and we let tit run for about an hour to test it out. The engine seemed to be cured it run like a top after starting and the temp was great 160 the oil pressure was 30 PSI and no smell of oil fumes or smoking of any kind. We hit the sack with everything ready for the early morning sail. Morning came with a strong wind and very cold temps around 40 degrees. We set out under power to test the engine and make up some time we lost with the engine repairs. The winds were very strong and the air was cold we had on all the clothing we could find to keep warm. I headed for port Salinas 32 miles away. We came to the harbor entrance around 4pm cold and just plain exhausted. As I tied up to the dock we seen the sailboat that sat with us in Harbor Beach parked also they took off at 6am two hours before us. The engine ran fantastic and I believe I cured that problem finally. All that was on my mind was some hot food and a hot shower. I was so stressed out from the engine and no sleep the past few nights because of the wind and cold temps with no heater on board. I cooked up some chicken sandwiches took a hot shower then I crashed for the night. The next day was nice and warm with sunshine and blue sky. We headed out for Port Huron. We again used the engine since there was just no wind this day stopping at Lexington 12 miles away to have some lunch. As we were tying up to the docks I stepped off the bow only to miss the dock and ended up in the lake it was cold and not very graceful. Well I cooked up some soup and we got off the head for Port Huron 22 miles away. Still no wind so we just motored since the engine was still running great. Coming to Port Huron you could see the Blue Water Bridge and some other sail boats out so we caught up with two sailboats and followed them into the river just 20 feet apart talking about sailing and our trip down to the Virgin Islands. The river was very cool beautiful homes and the freighters were right next to us it was very cool. We entered down the Black River went under a draw bridge to the down town marina. After tying up I went to get some fuel and some sodas to quench our thirst. The night was great with 70 degrees out and clear sky’s. The next morning it was time to head down the river and get to Detroit City. The river went fast as the current was strong and we made tracks. Coming into Lake St. Claire we had to stay in the shipping lane cause the lake was so shallow we hit bottom twice and just stayed in the channel heading for Detroit. Coming into the Detroit river was the same as St. Claire River we only went a little into the river and stayed downtown Detroit it was awesome to see the city all lit up for the night. We did almost 54 miles that day do to the current in the river. The next day we headed down the river to get to Lake Erie and then we would go hard to New Buffalo to catch the Erie Canal to New York City. The international bridge was like the Mackinaw bridge except there were all kinds of police boats around for security I guess we counted I believe 12 boats out. There were Canadian police, border patrol, coast guard and sheriff boats patrolling the river. We took pictures of the city and the Joe Louise arena. We arrived in Lake Erie late in the evening and stayed at Boles Boat Club. The weather was rain and windy.

Island Bound 2007-2008 - Blog 1

Island Bound 2007 !!

Well I finally have a little time to sit down and get some writing done to send out to you all . It’s been quite a trip so far sailing around Lake Michigan and down the Lake Huron coast. The weather has been like most Michigan weather unpredictable. I must say though that it’s been warm most of the trip. We sailed in 90 degree temps just yesterday and have finished sailing today with 50 degree temps, yuk the fun meter is right at its lowest with 50 degree temps and water temp of 60 degrees, hell the water is warmer than the air today that’s Michigan though.

The trip started off with little wind but picked up with 50 mph winds in Frankfort Michigan and waves of 14 feet which we didn’t really realize till we got into the harbor and the other boaters were trying to call us on our radio to see if we were ok out there and coming in. That night it was gale force winds and we sat till 3pm the next day till the winds settled down. It was fun though surfing down the waves of such height. The waves were higher than the boat many times. We could do nothing except sail till we were able to go into the Frankfort port. We left Frankfort at 3pm and sailed with beautiful winds all night till we reached Leland harbor, caught some sleep and sailed off the next day keeping the bow pointed to the bridge. The engine was giving us trouble it would start smoking a little; than it would quite and we would have to wait to start it a few hours later which made it very hard when we would come into port for the night or to catch some sleep. We sailed up to Charlevoix and anchored there in the bay for the night catching some sleep. The ramen noodle company is our best friend, we should have stock in because we eat the hell out of them. We have gone through 6 cases of them so far. Pasta in a plastic bag yum yum. We sailed into the night again coming around the point of the mackinaw bridge at 2am in the morning with great winds and believe it or not 75 degree temps at 2 am. We had a storm coming in from the west so we anchored in a small bay till 6 am and proceeded to go through the straits under the bridge with a wonderful sunrise it was spectacular to say the least. The thunder and lightning storm the night before was also beautiful but scary with us being out in the bay with a sail boat and a 35 foot aluminum lightning rod stuck in the air. We stopped at Mackinaw City and worked on the engine changing the oil and pulling all the old gas out putting fresh in and a set of new spark plugs. The trip continued with nice winds down the east side of Michigan to Harrisville Michigan were again the engine gave us trouble replacing the fuel pump this time. I’m becoming and expert on the ATOMIC 4 ENGINE by the way. This engine was built in 1932 40 thousand of them for WWII to put them in military boats small crafts. They didn’t us them all and the boating industry picked these up and placed them in sail boats. There nickname is the ATOM BOMB they are tough and I think somewhat easy to work on. I prefer not to work on them but I do what I can to save hundreds of dollars on a boat mechanic. Well we are off again with a new fuel pump and headed down to cross the Saginaw bay area to Port Huron. We sail all night again because the weather is great temps in the 70s again we pull into port Austin at 2 am and go to sleep. Up again at 7am sailing with great winds going to Sanilac Michigan and yes again the engine it giving us trouble again. We pull into Harbor beach and it is here I’m now working on putting and new head gasket in and a new thermostat and plug wires. I will put this in on Thursday and we will give it another go. I hope this time I have the problem solved. We keep getting water in our oil crank case which would indicate head gasket. I have talked with many Mechanics and they come to the same conclusion. So I have the engine all tore apart waiting new parts first thing in the morning. All that said I still would rather be doing nothing else right now. The trip is new and exciting each and every day. The people we have met are great and friendly the scenery is spectacular and the sailing is fantastic. I will write more again soon we will be getting to Detroit by Saturday Night should be a pretty scene with all the lights of Detroit from the water.

Island Bound 2007-2008

ISLAND BOUND 2007-2008!!

We all dream of doing something great in our lives, something that to us makes a diference in our life. What it is we do is our choice or at least some what in our control. We have but one life to fill with accomplishments and goals or ideas. For some it is to work at a great job and have a fulfilling career. Some it's to have a great family, a wonderful house, friends and a car of our dreams. The point is it's totally up to you what you want and how you go about getting it. I on the other hand don't ask for much just the opportunity to see it all and to breath all it is that life has to offer. I don't ask of others to be something there not. I dont want more than my share, and I only wish that I be respected and treated with the respect I give forth to my friends and family. Please dont judge me and I will not judge you. It is you who has to live with what choices you have made in your life not I. My dreams are of far away places and beautiful experiences strange and new. I love purple sunsets, walks in the rain and swimming in an ocean so blue you can taste it's color. The world is surrounded by little wonders and small pleasures but we fail to see it for what it is. The greatest thing we can obtain is the things that are free to our souls, imagination and thought. Imagine if you will a forest covered in a blanket of snow freshly fallen and the only tracks in the snow are your's and the animals that share the space with you at that time. Are you stopping to fully take in this veiw or are just pretending to. The old saying " Seeing the forest for the trees" truly exists if you really take the time to open yourself up to it. Breath the air of life for it will be gone in a short time, and it will not be sorry or judge you for what you have done. I don't dream I wonder then I walk to see what it is I wondered about. My dream to sail 3500 miles started with I wonder what it would be like and I now know. I wake to a sunrise each morning so beautiful it can only be experienced. I go to sleep to the waves lapping against the hull of the boat and a gentle rocking so peaceful and relaxing it's to difficult to describe. My home goes everywhere I want it to go, I have new scenery every other day. I know this will only last as long as I choose it to and that is why I enjoy what I'm doing as of right now. Please stay with me on this journey of adventure and discovery. Read some of the information I put on this site and maybe you too will find some type of discovery in yourself. Together we can wonder what it would be like to ?????? SKIPPER OUT
